Presbyterian churches are governed by elders who meet in a series of connected courts. Here is how that works, and how it shapes the way ministers are called and ordained.
Presbyterian and Reformed polity compared
Both are governed by elders, both call ministers through the congregation and both guard the church with confessions. The differences are in the status of the wider assemblies, the minister’s membership and the way ordination works.
Reformed church government: consistory, classis and synod
Continental Reformed churches also rule by elders, but they arrange their assemblies differently. This article explains the Church Order of Dort tradition and how it works today.
How a minister is called and ordained: Presbyterian and Reformed compared
Step by step, how a pastor comes to serve a congregation in a Presbyterian church and in a continental Reformed church.
